South Dakota State University has an aging swine research unit at their Brookings campus. The current research facility is 40 years old and is antiquated in terms of today’s production systems. As a result, the University has made a decision to rebuild their swine research operation. The University had a competitive procurement process to select a design team to complete the work. The project consists of three new teaching research facilities for gestating, farrowing, and finishing functions. The buildings are functional livestock production centers that incorporate new state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities.
The responsibilities of the project team members include surveying, site civil, structural, and manure containment design functions. The design team has met numerous times with the University and faculty members in an extended design process to assure that all of the research functions anticipated by the University can be performed in the facility. Our experience in working in the commercial livestock production industry has aided in the process.
